The Best of SharePoint at Build

by Gary Pretty, Mando Group

Recently I was fortunate enough to be able to attend Microsoft’s Build developer conference (http://www.buildwindows.com), which was held immediately after the launch of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, and with the timing being as such, many of the sessions were centred around these platforms. However, other technologies and platforms were given a lot of focus at the event, including the recently released to manufacturing, SharePoint 2013.

Having spent much of my time at Mando Group working with SharePoint, I was eager to find out what was new from a development standpoint in the most recent version of the platform. I am happy to say that there was some great content on offer and I wanted to provide you with a round-up of some of the best sessions which are available to watch online right now over at Channel 9.

What's New for Developers in Office 2013 and SharePoint 2013

This session was a neat introduction for developers with previous experience of SharePoint to find out what is in store for them in the SharePoint 2013. Highlights of the session included discussion about creating SharePoint apps, the new cloud app model and the new expanded API for SharePoint, the improvements to which were the real take-away for me from this session. Definitely a good first session to watch from Build and not one to miss!

Building apps for Office and SharePoint 2013 using the web technologies you know and love, Parts 1 and 2

SharePoint developers are by no means left out of the new wave of app development thanks to the arrival of the SharePoint and Office app store. There is a lot to consider when creating apps for SharePoint and several different types of app that can be created. These two sessions will take you through everything you will need to start creating apps, looking into the various development techniques and hosting options and looking at the inner workings of several example apps.

Building end-to-end apps for SharePoint with Windows Azure and Windows 8

For me this session was the best session of the conference. In this session we see how end-to-end solutions can be created that span SharePoint, Azure and various devices, through the use of things such as notifications in Windows 8 and Windows Phone, to create a seamless and innovative experience for the user. In this hour we take a look at a demo solution that achieves this vision and the underlying architecture and code that is required to make it all happen.
